A Georgian-style sofa by Robson and Sons of Newcastle-on-Tyne, retaining the maker’s metal plate beneath the seat. circa 1890/1900.

The sofa has a straight back, high square arms and square tapered legs fitted with castors. Its narrow arms allow a generous seating width within an overall width of 206cm.

Traditionally constructed with a coil-sprung seat and a separate horsehair-filled squab cushion. The squab retains its original mattress ticking to the edges with later added top layers to the rest and has been restitched. The original horse hair was been washed. dried and re-used.

Offered stripped for reupholstery. The frame is sturdy, with surface wear to the exposed timber, old upholstery tack holes and wear to the leg finishes. The remaining upholstery is worn and incomplete. The castors are later replacements, visually in keeping with the sofa and all working.
