Pair of 19th Century Upholstered X-Frame Armchairs in the Jacobean Manner
A pair of 19th century upholstered X-frame armchairs in the Jacobean manner.
Each chair has a high rectangular back topped with acorn finials, curved arms with scrolled terminals and a shaped X-frame base centred by a roundel. The frames are covered in gold-toned velvet, finished with decorative studs, braid and fringe.
The seats are sprung with traditional horsehair build-up and loose cushions. Both frames are sturdy, and the existing good-quality upholstery remains in fairly good condition. There is some discolouration to the velvet, an upholstery repair to one backrest and losses to the velvet around the feet.
Offered in their present upholstery, which may be retained or replaced according to the buyer’s preference.
Dimensions per chair:
Width 66cm × Depth 64cm × Height 109cm

Note: The X-frame form draws on Renaissance chairs of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, themselves derived from the ancient curule seat.
