Late 19th Century Country House Chesterfield Sofa for Upholstery

A late 19th century country house Chesterfield sofa of generous three-seat proportions, with a low continuous back, broad rolled arms and a fully sprung seat.

The sofa retains a particularly good amount of traditional upholstery beneath its existing coverings. The seat, back and arms are all sprung, with the coil springs traditionally hand tied. Of particular interest, the original floral lining fabric remains in place and is hand sewn directly onto the hessian.

The sofa stands on substantial turned and fluted front legs with castors, together with shaped rear legs. The rear castors are later replacements.

There is also a handwritten workshop inscription to the frame which appears to read in part “upholstered by John Byrne, March 1899” and “H B Patterson and Co.” The inscription is faint and the wording has not been fully verified, but provides an interesting record of the sofa’s upholstery history.

Offered for reupholstery. The existing covering is worn, incomplete and partially stripped, while the traditional upholstery beneath has been retained. The exposed frame shows the expected historic tack holes, marks and wear associated with previous upholstery.
