Howard and Sons Serpentine Chesterfield Sofa 19thC
A generously proportioned serpentine Chesterfield sofa by Howard and Sons, dating to circa 1900.
The sofa has a low, continuous back sweeping into substantial scroll arms, above a broad serpentine seat rail. It stands on finely turned front legs and swept rear legs with castors.
The front castors are stamped “Howard and Sons Ltd, London”, while the rear leg carries the numbers 14444 and 3440. These markings, together with the characteristic leg turning, construction and proportions, confirm the maker.
The seat retains traditional upholstery with a sprung foundation and medium firm horsehair edge. The frame is sound, with no repairs found, and is presently covered in plain calico lining ready for upholstery in a fabric of the purchaser’s choice.
