19th Century Folk Art Pine Wall Cupboard with Tulip Decoration

A highly decorative 19th century European folk art wall cupboard, constructed in pine and extensively worked with incised, punched and coloured decoration.

The single boarded door is covered with repeated stylised tulip motifs, outlined by hand and retaining muted green and earthy colouring. Particularly striking are the densely worked borders surrounding the door and carcass, formed from repeated punched circles, geometric triangular ornament and further elongated floral motifs.

The door is hung on a pair of long decorative iron strap hinges and retains its lock, shaped escutcheon and rounded knob, although there is no key. The pine interior is fitted with a shelf and several iron hooks.

The cupboard has a good, naturally aged surface throughout, with considerable variation in colour and wear to the pine and decoration. There is some warping to the door, causing it to sit slightly ajar, together with signs of old repairs and losses to some of the decorative detail beneath the cupboard.
