Large 19th Century Sarcophagus Ottoman for Reupholstery

A large Victorian upholstered storage ottoman of sarcophagus form, dating from the second half of the 19th century.

The long rectangular body has the characteristic concave sides and projecting moulded borders associated with sarcophagus-form furniture. Its hinged upholstered lid opens to reveal a useful storage compartment beneath, making it particularly suitable for use at the end of a bed, beneath a window or as a substantial low seat.

The ottoman retains its original brass and porcelain castors and has a firm frame. The considerable length of 164cm gives it greater presence and practical seating space than many surviving examples of this type.

The existing upholstery is later and the lid has not been upholstered using entirely traditional methods. It is therefore offered for reupholstery, allowing the purchaser to select a suitable textile while retaining the form.
