Pair of Circa 1900 Woodstock Armchairs in the Manner of Howard and Sons

A matched pair of antique Woodstock style armchairs, probably English and dating to circa 1900.

The form closely follows the Woodstock armchair associated with Howard and Sons, with low deep-buttoned backs, broad scroll-over arms, sprung seats and loose feather-filled seat cushions. 

Closely matched rather than identical, the chairs differ subtly in their proportions, with one slightly wider and shallower than the other. This gives them the character of a traditional his and hers pair while remaining very closely related when placed together.

Both are traditionally upholstered and raised on dark tapering legs with brass castors to all four legs. The frames are sturdy with no woodworm found, and the existing traditional upholstery appears to be in good condition. The current floral covering is worn and partly removed and the pair is offered for recovering.

A particularly good pair of compact country house armchairs, with the generous upholstered form and distinctive shape of the Howard and Sons Woodstock design.
