Industrial Foundry Crucibles / Decorative Vessels – Bradford

Two vintage industrial foundry crucibles sourced from a local foundry in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Each has developed a heavily textured and individually distinctive surface through prolonged foundry use, with irregular worn rims, pitting, encrustation and extensive evidence of exposure to intense heat.

No. 1 has the warmer surface of the two, with predominantly brown and ochre tones alongside areas of black and muted green. No. 2 is darker, predominantly black and charcoal grey with reddish-brown areas towards the lower section.

The crucibles appear to be made from a graphite-rich refractory material, likely a clay-graphite composition, although the precise material has not been confirmed.

Strong pieces of Yorkshire industrial salvage, now well suited as sculptural decorative vessels, cachepots or planters. Neither has a drainage hole.
